MADISON ON TRACK 2045
COMPREHENSIVE PLAN
THE PLAN
In response to its rapid growth as a suburban community, the City of Madison, Alabama, launched the Madison on Track 2045 comprehensive planning process in early 2022 to proactively guide development over the next two decades. Led by Orion Planning + Design, the effort emphasized place-based, context-sensitive solutions grounded in collaboration, data analysis, and a strong legal framework. The goal was to establish a clear vision to manage growth, enhance quality of life, and preserve Madison’s unique community character. A defining feature of the process was its robust, multi-faceted community engagement strategy, ensuring the plan reflected local priorities and aspirations. This included a diverse citizen Advisory Committee, extensive stakeholder interviews, a citywide survey with nearly 600 responses, and a week-long series of interactive Community Planning Workshops. During these workshops, residents used hands-on tools, including Lego blocks, to visualize and map potential growth scenarios. Engagement was further supported by a dedicated project website that served as a central information and feedback hub.
The process culminated in a comprehensive draft plan released for public review in late 2024, followed by a 65-day comment period and a final public hearing. Incorporating community feedback, the Madison Planning Commission unanimously adopted the Madison on Track 2045 Comprehensive Plan in February 2025. The result is a forward-looking, actionable roadmap shaped by and for the Madison community. Find the adopted plan here.
